    2. Once you’ve fitted your filter, the unit will warn you that the tank is empty and that you need to add water - use cold tap water.

    3. It can take up to 10 minutes for the water to filter through into the base of the unit. Once enough water has filtered through, the tank empty warning light will go off and your system is ready to use.

As with any other method of making up a feed for a baby, it’s essential that good hygiene practices are observed when using and maintaining your Perfect Prep™ Day & Night machine.

It’s very important that your everyday routine includes simple hygiene steps like keeping formula away from the hopper and only ever holding the top of the filter. Ensure that your hands and all surfaces that come in to contact with the machine and its components are clean, and that the unit is away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

  • How often should I clean my machine?

You should clean your Perfect Prep™ machine:

    • Before its first use and then on a 4-weekly basis.
    • If your machine hasn’t been used for 1 week.
    • When replacing your filter.

We’ve prepared some common questions and troubleshooting advice to help you with your new Perfect Prep™ Day & Night Machine.

  • Where is the best place to keep my Perfect Prep?

The Perfect Prep should be kept in a cool, dry location, avoiding direct sunlight, and kept away from warm appliances. This is recommended to avoid the tank temperature getting too warm.

  • Do I need to boil the water before I pour it into the water hopper?

No, we recommend you use normal tap water in the hopper.  If you do use boiling water, the machine will recognise that the water is too hot, and it won’t let you dispense a feed as the milk would be too hot and pose a risk to your baby.

  • What does the hot shot do?

The 70°C hot shot helps to dissolve the formula powder quickly and easily, it also kills bacteria which may be present in the formula itself. Giving you extra peace of mind that your baby’s feed is safe.

If you want to learn more about how the hot shot works please visit

  • How often do I need to change the filter?

On average the filter should last around 3 months, however this depends on the frequency of use and what size bottles you are preparing.

  • Why do I have to use a Tommee Tippee filter?

The Tommee Tippee filters include an anti-bacterial filtration membrane which has been verified as being as effective as boiling water for removing bacteria. So, although other water filters will fit your machine, they will NOT remove the same level of bacteria.

Therefore, it’s extremely important that you make sure you’re buying and using the correct Tommee Tippee filters with your Perfect Prep machine.

Find out more about the testing results and what makes our filters more effective here.
  • Why do I need to submerge the filter before first use?

Submerging primes the filter before use, ensuring that any air bubbles or loose particles within the filter are removed prior to use. If bubbles remain, it could affect the operation of the machine. Submerging should only take a minute or so.

  • How long can I leave unused water in the tank?

Water is a food stuff. We recommend using it within 1-2 days.

  • Why is the amount of feed over or under the level of feed I was expecting?

As is normal with all manufactured products, the Perfect Prep Machine dispensed water volume has an allowed tolerance of +/- 5%. Additionally, there are potential tolerances in the measurement graduations of our Closer to Nature bottles.

This means that any volume below 100 ml may vary by +/- 5 ml, and any volume above 100 ml may vary by +/- 5%.

It’s therefore possible for the combination of both tolerances, machine, and bottle, to make the volume dispensed by the machine appear inaccurate.

Our Closer to Nature baby bottles all meet or surpass the requirements for volume tolerances as specified by European Standard EN 14350.

Although we do not manufacture formula powder, we have looked at what the leading brands recommend and most assume that a 9lb+ baby will be on 4oz feeds. It is difficult to recommend a "suitable from" age because every newborn’s weight is different. Some babies are onto 4oz feeds within a couple of weeks whereas others may take longer.

  • Why can’t I make a feed smaller than a 4oz bottle?

We would love for you to be able to prepare a smaller bottle volume with the Perfect Prep unit, but it cannot make up a bottle below 4oz because the volume of the feed needs to be large enough to easily split into two:

    1. An initial hot shot big enough to dilute the formula into
    2. A dilution big enough to dilute the hot down to body temperature ready to serve

For any smaller feeds, we don’t have enough hot water in which to dilute the formula powder effectively, or enough to dilute and cool it down sufficiently from 70°C.

  • My unit keeps getting too hot and stops working.

The Perfect Prep unit contains a probe that measures the temperature of the water in the tank which prevents the unit from dispensing if the water is above 27°C. This is a key safety feature to ensure that the final feed is not too hot for your baby.

High water temperature should only ever be an issue in hotter climates, but it is not uncommon for mains water to rise in temperature in cooler climates during a sustained period of hot weather.

We therefore recommend that the cold tap is flushed for 10 seconds before filling the tank.

To prevent your unit getting too hot…

    • Keep it out of direct sunlight.
    • Regularly top it up with cold tap water rather than letting a full unit stand and warm for long periods of time.
    • Keep a cold jug of water in the fridge.
    • Add some ice cubes to the hopper.
  • My temperature warning light keeps coming on and I don’t know why. What can I do to turn this off?

The only time we would expect this warning light to come on is during the cleaning mode, when you flush the unit with boiled water. Thereafter, you should only ever fill your unit with cold water from the tap.

  • Sometimes when I change the water filter there are black particles on the cartridge. What are they?

You may find that there’s a small residue of black carbon in the bag or on the surface of the cartridge; this can happen and it’s nothing to be concerned about. These dust particles are harmless and will be reduced during the initial set up process when submerging in clean fresh water.

The carbon used in the filter is food grade certified and therefore poses no harm to your little one.

  • I’m struggling to change the settings on my Perfect Prep Day & Night Machine.

Please watch the video below to learn how to adjust the settings on your unit.

  • My unit has no power.

Our first recommendation to resolve this issue is to try multiple plug sockets in your home to establish if the plug socket itself is not working as expected.

Following this check, if you are still not getting any power to the unit and have a receipt, the quickest option would be to return the unit to the retailer who you purchased it from, and they should be able to offer a quick exchange.

If you don’t have a receipt, then we would suggest getting in touch with our Parent Hub team. To ensure a speedy resolution with the team, please have the following information to hand.

    • Batch code of the unit (this is engraved on the base consists of 5 numbers and then the letters XO).
    • The date and retailer purchased from.
    • Proof of purchase.
  • IS IT SAFE TO MAKE A BOTTLE WITH THE PERFECT PREP?

Yes. Perfect Prep™ machines are designed to make a parent’s life simpler and passes all appropriate standards for electrical baby products. The filter has been designed and independently tested to be as effective as boiling water from a microbiological perspective and ensures impurities are removed so that clean and safe water is delivered to the bottle, and the hot shot kills bacteria that may be in the formula powder.
