Sleep tips for springtime

The arrival of spring brings with it warmer weather and sunnier days, but we know that it can also cause your baby’s sleep routine to change – thanks Mother Nature!

Things that you barely thought about before you became a parent like brighter mornings and the clocks springing forward by one hour can lead you to wonder how to keep your little one sleeping soundly.

Here are some of the things that can unsettle your baby’s sleep when spring rolls around…

  • Chirping birds! Those pesky birds outside your window can start singing as early as 4:00am and may continue for several hours. During their dawn chorus, their chirping is usually louder, livelier, and more frequent.
  • The sun coming up earlier in the morning makes rooms brighter, sooner.
  • Warmer temperatures.
  • Extra light at bedtime can make it trickier to wind down.
  • To help you prepare, we’ve got some top springtime sleep tips…

Clock change

Luckily, the springtime clock change is usually the easiest to handle. If your little one is in a settled sleep schedule, simply keep their wake up and bedtime the same using the new adjusted time. It will possibly take a few days for them to adjust, but they’ll soon get into the swing of it, just as us gown ups do!

Alternatively, you can choose to take a gradual transition approach and adjust your baby’s waking time slightly earlier than usual, around four to five days before the clocks change. By the time that the clocks change, they’ll be adjusted to the new times.

The perfect sleep environment

  • Put up a blackout blind: Our portable blackout blind is ideal for use at home, and can really help create a snoozy, dark environment, even when it’s bright outside.
  • Use a toddler alarm clock: Teaching little one’s about time, takes, well… time! But our selection of sleep training clocks can help simplify the concept for toddlers, teaching them when to wake up and when to stay in bed.
  • Pop on some white (or pink) noise: Ambient sounds can drown out the sounds of the changing season – tweeting birds, we’re looking at you! Our Dreammaker™ sleep aid plays two types of pink noise. First, standard pink noise that the whole family can hear, and low-pass filtered pink noise with a 6 dB per octave roll-off. In simple terms, this setting mimics the exact frequency that sound would reach foetal ears, mimicking the sounds your little one heard in the womb.
  • Adjust the temperature: Just like us, your baby will also have trouble settling in a room that is too warm or too cool. The ideal room temperature is between 16 and 20°C. To help, our sleepwear styles come in a range of togs and they’re made using breathable, all-natural fibres. To make sure that your little one is comfortable and safe, always ensure that they’re wearing the right tog for the season. We’ve got a gadget that can help too, meet the GroEgg room thermometer!

One sleepwear style, all year round, meet out All Season Sleepbag!

Teaming up with sleep scientists, we’ve developed a dual-tog Grobag™ that can be worn in temperatures from 14 to 27+°C.

Designed to be worn all year round, our new Grobag™ has removable zip ‘n’ pop layers that mean you can adjust what your baby’s wearing as they sleep. Made for little ones aged between 0 and 36 months, it’s super versatile and can change from 2.5 to 1.0 tog with ease, removing the need for loose bedding.

Basically, changing your baby’s wearing layers and keeping them safe as they sleep has never been easier!
